Metal wall grilles made of wrought iron can be interesting additions to your home. They can provide soft additional curves in an ultra – modern space. It can look vintage or contemporary depending on the color of the paint. However, some people are a bit hesitant in getting them because of the “rust” problem. It is true, the ugly orange stain can be quite troublesome specially when it rubs off on your pristine wall. But, the best thing about wrought iron pieces is that they can be easily made over to make them worthy for your home again.
If you are wondering how exactly are you supposed to do that, here are step – by – step procedures to help you out.
1. If the wall grille has been stashed away for quite some time, the first thing that you have to do is to clean it a bit. This will help you check how much damage would you have to work on. If you see some chipping on the paint, try to peel off as much as you can without using steel brushes. Brushes with hard bristles may just create more damage to the metal.
2. Apply your preferred rust remover to the wall grille. A word of caution, most of the commercially produced rust removers contain a toxic substance called oxalic acid. When ingested this can be really poisonous. So make sure that you follow all the precautionary measures before using them. If the damage is not that much, you can always opt for safer home remedies like lime, vinegar and or baking soda. They would just have to stay on your wall grille longer but they can be really effective.
3. Once the solution has taken effect, rinse the item thoroughly with water.
4. Dry the wall grille with soft wash cloth.
5. Once completely dry, you can start painting them with your preferred color. Remember to pick a paint that is made especially for metal. Depending on the complexity design, this can be a bit tricky. Using an air brush can help you cover all areas evenly.
6. Set it aside to allow the paint to settle and dry. Most of the wrought iron pieces would not really need to be polished especially if they stay indoors but applying car wax prior to hanging can give your metal wall grilles an additional glow.
Those following procedures can help you restore your piece in no time. To protect your pieces from rusting again, make sure that you inspect and clean them thoroughly at least once every two weeks. During this bi – weekly cleaning, you can either use mild soap or commercially sold dish washing liquid. Remember to dry them off prior to hanging. Also, try to avoid hanging them in places with high humidity, as this can be pretty conducive to rusting. Just remember, wrought iron can be pretty durable, but if you will neglect them, they can be gone even before you know it. So if you want to enjoy them for years or maybe even decades, proper maintenance and care is the key.
