Architecture and interior design are two things that evolve through time. Man has managed to build houses from straw to wood, from wood to stone and finally from stone to industrial materials like steel, glass and concrete. The castles, the mansions or even the simple stone houses are now replaced by modern flats and high – rise condominiums. Consequently, as the design for houses changed, the interior decoration also followed through. The warm and inviting ambiance brought about by wood and bricks has been replaced by the cold and industrial feel that came along with steel and glass. Abstract paintings and sculptures easily took the place of  impressionist paintings and rustic candelabras.

Then again, there is no denying that even with the current interior design trends, more and more people are still clamoring to somehow, revert back to the old days. Perhaps to them, nothing beats the feeling of going home to an abode that is not only comfortable but warm and beautiful as well. In fact there are a lot of affluent people who pay interior designers a huge amount of money just to have the rustic feel back into their place. However, what some of them fail to realize is that, achieving the “rustic French” look is neither hard nor expensive. In fact the design transformation can easily be done by changing the color scheme of their place and by bringing in some inexpensive decors.

So, if you have always wanted give your place a make over to go “rustic”, here are some ideas that you can work on.

• Give your wall a color make – over. Think of warm hues like red, brown, orange or any combination. You can give emphasis to several parts of the house by contrasting lighter shades with darker ones. Same goes with the floor treatment. Get rid of your white or gray carpet and replace it with a warmer shade of yellow, cream or brown. As a suggestion, use light colors on areas that you want to appear bigger.

• Accentuate your home by bringing in decors that remind you of the good old days. A wrought iron wall decor can be perfect for your home. You can choose from plaques to wall grilles that can be as small as 12 inches to the large 40 to 45 inches. Since the material used for these artworks are bendable, you are given a lot of design options. You can go for the traditional fleur – de –  lis wrought iron wall décor or, if curves are more to your liking, you can opt for pieces with intricate leaf and vine patterns. You can also get some candle sconces to light your hallways or to simply set a warm and romantic ambiance.

The best part? Wrought iron decors can last a long time as long as you do your part in maintaining them.

• Lastly make sure that you arrange the pieces in such a way that they are complementing each other. As much as possible, do not overdo the decorations. Always remember that subtlety and simplicity can draw the boundary between congested and harmonious
